What Makes the Perfect Mother's Day Afternoon Tea?

hand holding a box of sweet treats

Mother's Day is one of those occasions that deserves to feel genuinely special, not just a bunch of flowers grabbed at a petrol station, but a proper moment to celebrate the person who deserves it most. And few things say I really thought about this quite like a beautifully presented afternoon tea.

Whether you're planning a laid-back spread at home, treating Mum to a delivery she can enjoy at her leisure, or looking for the perfect collection of sweet things to bring to the table, here's everything you need to know about getting it right.

What is afternoon tea, exactly?

Afternoon tea has its roots in 1840s Britain, originally a light meal to bridge the gap between lunch and a late dinner. Today it's evolved into something far more celebratory: a tiered display of sandwiches, scones and sweet treats that's as much about the experience as the food itself.

For Mother's Day, afternoon tea hits a particular sweet spot. It's indulgent without being over the top, works for groups of all sizes, and, crucially, it gives Mum something beautiful to look at before she even takes a bite.

The three tiers: what should go where?

A classic afternoon tea is served across three tiers, each with its own role to play.

The bottom tier: savouries. Finger sandwiches are the traditional foundation. Think cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon and dill, or egg and cress. Cut them neatly, keep the fillings fresh, and don't overfill. This tier sets the tone for everything that follows.

The middle tier: scones. Warm, fluffy and served with clotted cream and jam, scones are the heart of a proper afternoon tea. The age-old debate of cream first or jam first is entirely up to you and your guests, though we'd never dream of taking sides. What matters is that they're freshly baked and generously topped.

The top tier: sweet treats. This is where things get really exciting. A great top tier balances flavour, texture and visual impact. Think delicate macarons, mini cakes, brownies, and beautifully decorated cupcakes. For Mother's Day, this is your moment to make it personal. Choose her favourite flavours, her favourite colours, or a combination of everything she loves.

Choosing the right cakes for Mother's Day

The cake element of your afternoon tea should feel celebratory rather than everyday. A few things to keep in mind:

Flavour variety matters. Aim for a mix of light and indulgent, a fresh cream sponge alongside a rich chocolate brownie, for example. This gives everyone at the table something to reach for.

Size is everything. Afternoon tea portions should be bite-sized or two-bite at most. Mini cakes, individual cupcakes and petit fours are perfect. You want Mum to be able to work through several treats without feeling like she's committed to an entire slice.

Presentation sets the mood. Even the most delicious cake looks even better when it's been given a little thought. Edible flowers, a dusting of icing sugar, or a simple personalised message can transform a sweet treat into something truly memorable.

At BKRY, our cupcakes, brownies and celebration treats can all be customised to suit the occasion, whether you want a specific flavour combination, a colour palette to match a theme, or simply the best version of Mum's all-time favourite bake.

Don't forget the details

The food might be the main event, but the details are what make afternoon tea feel like a real occasion.

  • A proper pot of tea, and not just one variety. Offer a classic English breakfast, a fragrant Earl Grey and something herbal for those who prefer caffeine-free.
  • Good china, or at the very least, your nicest mugs. Presentation counts for more than you'd think.
  • Fresh flowers. A small bunch on the table costs very little but adds so much atmosphere.
  • No rushing. Afternoon tea is meant to be lingered over. Clear the diary, put the phones down, and give Mum the unhurried afternoon she deserves.
