The Sweetest Send-Off: How to Celebrate School Leavers & Graduates

two young boys playing with flour

Whether your child is leaving primary school, finishing sixth form or graduating from university, one thing is certain: they've worked hard and they deserve a proper send-off.

These are genuinely significant milestones. The gathering after the leavers assembly, the afternoon in the garden with grandparents and cousins, the family dinner after the graduation ceremony. The moments you create around them matter just as much as the occasion itself.

Here are some of our favourite ways to celebrate with something sweet.

Bring cupcakes in for the whole class

For primary school leavers especially, there's something really lovely about marking the last day with a treat for the whole class to share together. Cupcakes are the obvious choice: no cutting, no plates, no fuss, and every child gets their own. Laid out in a box they look wonderful, and they feel far more special than a packet of biscuits from the corner shop.

This is one of the occasions we bake for most at BKRY in early summer, and it's one of our favourites. Year 6 children are at a wonderful age for a celebration like this: old enough to truly appreciate the thought that's gone into it, and young enough to be completely thrilled by the whole thing. We can personalise cupcakes with edible printed toppers too, whether that's a class photo, individual names or a simple Class of 2026 design, which always goes down well.

Make it personal with a celebration cake

If you're hosting a gathering at home after the leavers assembly or graduation ceremony, a celebration cake gives the occasion a proper focal point. A cake decorated with your child's name, their school colours, or something that reflects their interests and personality tells them louder than words that this moment matters.

For university graduates, a photo cake with a favourite image printed in edible ink is a particularly popular choice, whether that's a cap-and-gown shot or a picture that captures their time at university perfectly.

Let them choose their own flavour

One of the simplest ways to make the celebration feel personal is to involve your child or graduate in the decision. What's their favourite cake? What flavours do they love? If you're not sure, a visit to our Caversham shop to try our cupcakes and loaf cakes, baked in the same flavours as our celebration cakes, is a thoroughly enjoyable way to find out. For children especially, being part of the process gets them genuinely excited about what's coming.

Think about the occasion format

A classroom treat calls for cupcakes. A family garden party might suit a celebration cake as the centrepiece alongside a batch of matching cupcakes for easy serving. A graduation dinner might call for something more elegant and tiered. There's no single right answer, and the best choice is always the one that fits how you're actually celebrating.

Don't forget dietary requirements

If you're ordering for a whole class, it's worth checking with the school or parents whether any children have dietary requirements. We offer gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan and nut-free options, so just let us know when you order and we'll make sure everyone gets to join in.

When to order

We can take orders up to three days before your collection date, so if you've left it a little late it's always worth getting in touch to check availability. That said, May and June are among our busiest months. Between school leavers, graduations, Father's Day and summer birthdays our order books fill up quickly, so if you have a date in mind, the earlier you order the better.

All of our cupcakes and cakes are baked fresh to order at our Caversham bakery on Church Street in Reading. Browse our collection online or pop into the shop to talk through what you have in mind.

Because every leaver deserves a send-off as sweet as they are.
