Not all birthdays are created equal. The ones that end in a zero, or mark a genuinely significant moment in someone's life, carry a different weight to an ordinary birthday. They deserve more thought, more effort and a cake that actually reflects that. And if there's one style that captures a milestone more literally than any other, it's a number cake.
A number cake is exactly what it sounds like: a cake shaped and decorated to form the age being celebrated. At BKRY we make ours from layers of sponge filled and finished with buttercream, and they're one of our most popular products for milestone birthdays across every age group.
Part of what makes them work so well is their immediacy. The moment a number cake arrives at the table there's no question what's being celebrated or who it's for. It's bold, personal and visually striking in a way that a traditionally shaped cake with a number written on it simply isn't.
They're also more versatile than people expect. A number cake for an 18th can be dramatic and heavily decorated. One for a 50th can be elegant and refined. The format stays the same but the finish, the colours and the flavour can all be tailored entirely to the person and the occasion.
For milestone birthdays where the number itself is significant, an 18th, a 21st, a 30th, a 40th, a 50th and beyond, a number cake is worth serious consideration alongside a more traditional celebration cake. Some customers order both: a number cake as the centrepiece and a supplementary cake or batch of cupcakes for serving the wider group.
There's a reason people make more of an effort for an 18th or a 50th than they do for a 34th. These ages mean something. They mark transitions, achievements and chapters. The end of childhood, the beginning of adulthood, the midpoint of a life well lived, the arrival at an age that once seemed impossibly distant.
A milestone birthday is one of the few occasions where the people celebrating are genuinely paying attention. The decorations, the gathering, the cake. It all gets noticed and remembered in a way that an ordinary birthday celebration rarely does. Which means it's worth treating it accordingly.
An 18th birthday sits right at the intersection of childhood and adulthood, and the best celebrations tend to reflect both. Old enough for something elegant and considered, young enough for something fun and personal.
For the cake, this is an age where personalisation matters enormously. Something that reflects who they actually are rather than a generic coming-of-age design will land far better. Their favourite flavours, their interests, their sense of humour. A cake that could only be for them rather than any 18 year old.
Visually, 18th birthday cakes tend to work best when they make a statement. Bold colours, dramatic finishes, a design that photographs well and stops people when it arrives at the table. Our Lambeth cake with its intricate piped detailing is a particularly striking choice for this age, as is a bold drip cake in colours chosen specifically for the birthday person.
The 21st has regained a lot of its significance in recent years after a period when it was somewhat overshadowed by the 18th. There's a growing sense that 21 deserves its own moment, separate and distinct from the legal milestone of 18.
For a 21st, the cake can afford to be a little more grown up in feel without losing the sense of celebration. Elegant buttercream finishes, two-tier designs, something with a sense of occasion but also of personal taste. Number cakes are particularly popular for 21sts, partly for the visual impact and partly because the number itself feels so central to what's being celebrated. At this age they tend to work beautifully finished in bold colours or with decorative buttercream detailing that makes the most of the shaped format.
Thirty is the birthday that people tend to have the most complicated feelings about in advance and the most fun actually celebrating. By the time the day arrives, most people are ready to lean into it.
The best 30th birthday cakes tend to reflect a person at their most themselves. By 30, people know what they like and aren't particularly interested in pretending otherwise. A cake in genuinely favourite flavours, finished in a way that suits their aesthetic rather than a generic idea of what a 30th should look like, will always feel more right than something chosen off a shelf.
For the design, our Pearl cake with its soft lustrous finish suits the milestone beautifully for those who lean towards the elegant, while a bold Lambeth or a personalised drip cake works well for those who'd rather make more noise about it.
The 40th is, in our experience, one of the most celebrated milestones of all. By this point the people organising the party have usually decided that if a birthday is worth marking it's worth marking properly, and the result tends to be some of the most thoughtful and generous celebrations we bake for.
A 40th birthday cake should feel significant. This isn't the occasion for something understated unless that's genuinely what the person wants. Two tiers, a striking design, a flavour combination that reflects decades of knowing exactly what they love. Our Lambeth cake is one of our most popular choices for 40th birthdays, and for good reason. It has a grandeur and a beauty that suits the milestone without tipping into excess.
A 50th birthday is one of those occasions that tends to bring people together from across an entire life. Family, old friends, colleagues, people who haven't been in the same room for years. The cake sits at the centre of that gathering and carries a particular significance because of it.
For a 50th, we'd always encourage going back to what the birthday person genuinely loves rather than what seems appropriate for the age. Their favourite flavour from childhood. A design that reflects a lifetime of interests and character rather than a number on a cake. Something that says we know you, rather than we marked the occasion.
The milestone birthdays that come later in life are often the most joyful to celebrate and the most meaningful to get right. These are occasions where the people gathered have usually known each other for a long time, where the stories told over the table go back decades, and where the cake is part of a celebration of a life genuinely well lived.
For these milestones, elegance tends to win over drama. A beautifully finished buttercream cake, a design that's considered and personal, a flavour that means something. Our Vintage Heart Message cake is a particularly fitting choice for these occasions, with its timeless quality and the option to add a personal message that carries real weight at a celebration like this.
Ask them what they want. It sounds obvious but it's surprisingly often overlooked. Most people have a strong opinion about their own birthday cake if you ask them directly. The ones who say they don't care usually do, a little.
Think about the gathering. A cake for an intimate dinner of ten people is a different proposition to one for a party of sixty. Getting the size right matters as much as getting the design right, and our portion guide on the blog is a useful starting point if you're not sure where to begin.
Consider a number cake. For milestone birthdays where the age is a central part of the celebration, a number cake is one of the most visually immediate and personally resonant choices you can make. If you haven't seen one in person, pop into the shop and ask us about them. They're more impressive than photographs suggest.
Order with enough time. Milestone birthday cakes are among the most involved things we make, and the more notice we have the more we can do. We can take orders up to three days before collection, but for a birthday that deserves to be done properly, earlier is always better.
Don't forget the flavour. It's easy to get caught up in the visual side of a milestone cake and treat the flavour as an afterthought. It shouldn't be. A beautiful cake that doesn't taste as good as it looks is a missed opportunity. If you're not sure which flavour to choose, pop into our Caversham shop and try our cupcakes and loaf cakes, which are made in the same flavours as our celebration cakes.
Milestone birthdays come around rarely and they matter. The person being celebrated will remember how it felt to walk into a room that had been prepared for them, to see a table that had been dressed with them in mind, and to have a cake that showed someone had genuinely thought about what would make them happy.
That's really what all of this is about. Not the cake specifically, but what the cake represents. The effort, the thought, and the very clear message that this person and this moment are worth celebrating properly.
