Student Story: The Ultimate Party Cake Class

Student Story: Baking a Baby Shower Cake to Remember

When it comes to celebration cakes, there’s something extra special about making one yourself — especially when it’s for a milestone moment. We caught up with one of our Ultimate Party Cake Class students, who joined us to create a cake for her step-daughter’s baby shower and left with a whole lot of confidence (and buttercream skills).

Tell us a little about yourself and what led you to join the Ultimate Party Cake Class.

I work for MBC, a marketing company based in Reading. They bought me the Ultimate Party Cake Class as a gift for my 60th birthday, which was so lovely — they really know me well! I already like to make cakes for work, so the class enhanced my skills massively. Creative experiences like this make such thoughtful gift ideas in Berkshire, especially for milestone birthdays.

What made you decide to create a cake for your step-daughter’s baby shower rather than buy one?

It’s so special to take something that you’ve had some investment in. It was the first grandchild too, so it was a really special day.

How did it feel walking into the class knowing you were making something for such a special occasion?

I was a bit nervous, but really looking forward to it. Jo made me feel instantly welcome and ready to get started.

Can you talk us through the cake you created on the day and the design choices you made?

I found the whole experience so fun, picking up top tips along the way. I feel the whole experience has made me confident to decorate more cakes. I chose blue as we know it’s a boy!

What parts of the class did you enjoy the most, and why?

The piping. I didn’t think I could do it and I did!

Was there a skill or technique you learned that really boosted your confidence?

Covering the cake in icing and learning how to make it smooth using the cake turntable.

How did you find the teaching style and support throughout the class?

So good. Jo is great — she gave me so much confidence that I could do it. This supportive, hands-on approach is what makes cake decorating classes in Berkshire feel accessible, even if you’ve never decorated a cake before.

How did it feel taking your finished cake home at the end of the class?

Very proud.

Has this experience changed how you feel about making celebration cakes in the future?

For sure. I feel so confident now and have a good plan, so I know I can create what’s in my head.

What would you say to someone who’s thinking about booking the class but isn’t sure if it’s for them?

Go — you’ll learn so much!

Looking back, what does this cake and the experience of making it mean to you now?

It was such a fun experience and felt extra special as it was a gift and for the baby shower. It’s made me super confident that I can recreate the cake and go on to create my own decorations. My work buddies are looking forward to seeing what I’ve learnt too!

Inspired to give it a go yourself? Whether you’re baking for a big celebration or simply looking for creative activities in Berkshire, our Ultimate Party Cake Class is designed to help you build confidence and create a cake you’ll be proud to take home — making it a memorable experience or a thoughtful gift idea for someone who loves cake.
